An Interview with our Lead Developer, Rudi.

Interview with our Lead Developer, Rudi

Hi Rudi! Go ahead and introduce yourself and tell us what your title is here at Luke's Local.

I’m Rudi, I’m from (and still in!) Asuncion, Paraguay, and I’m the Lead Developer here at Luke’s Local.

What first drew you to work at Luke's Local?

Food! Even during  the onboarding process, everything was about shared love of food. I’ve been working in the food industry on projects similar to Luke’s, and the Luke's Local delivery app, for a long time, both here (in Paraguay) and in Europe.

Can you tell us a little bit about what your job here entails?

My job involves taking the ideas of the people of Luke’s, and transforming them from the ideas stage to production. Thinking about what is needed in terms of tech, and building the tools that are needed. This is of course not a one person effort, it is a team effort. So seeing that through, and making sure everything works smoothly - or at least as smoothly as possible!

What initially drew you to becoming an engineer/programmer?

I’ve always been a nerd and wanted to know how things work. With time you notice that everything relies on software. I wanted to know how things worked underneath, so I think: out of curiosity. I started playing with computers and got hooked on it, and started spending nights and weekends building algorithms for fun. Then it became a career.

What is your favorite part about working at Luke’s?

My favorite part of working with Luke’s is the people. I’ve been working on teams for at least 15 years - i’ve worked on teams from pretty much every continent, and I’ve never experienced the kind of team spirit that I’ve found at Luke’s Local. It’s really..I can’t find the word for it. Spirit-lifting, maybe? Feeling a part of this family,  is really one of the nicest parts of my day.

What’s your favorite thing to eat for dinner?

I live in an area where you can find some of the best meat in the world, so I always go for that. Meat Any type of meat.

What are some things you enjoy doing in your spare time away from the computer?

I enjoy traveling and spending time with my people, my family and friends. Any kind of social activity! Social contact is so limited these days, so I really long for the days when it was easy. So I take any opportunity I can get.

Thanks for chatting with us, Rudi!

Working with Rudi is truly as sweet as it sounds. He is always bringing a smile to everyone's face, and we couldn't feel luckier to have him.

Cooking for Chosen Family: Why the Fox Den's Thanksgiving Tastes Like Love

Here's what most people don't realize about cooking for hundreds of families: you start planning the moment you know it matters. And Thanksgiving always matters.

While you were still recovering from New Year's Eve, I was already thinking about your Thanksgiving table. Our Luke’s Local turkey orders are sent to the farmers in January. Yes, that’s how far in advance we start.

Four Blocks from Paradise
Four Blocks from Paradise

July 24, 2025

This August, Dead & Company are playing Golden Gate Park, four blocks from our Inner Sunset store on 9th Avenue.

The same music that shaped my understanding of joy, community, and what it means to be present will be echoing through the neighborhood where we've built our newest store. The same songs I learned on my brothers' bedroom floor, the same recordings I obsessed over as a teenager, the same tape that was playing when Charlie and I took our first ride in the Tacoma. Everything comes full circle in the place where we're trying to prove that grocery stores can still be neighborhood cornerstones.

Why My Truck Only Plays Tapes
Why My Truck Only Plays Tapes

The tape wall in our 9th Avenue store exists because we've been struggling to find the right balance of structure and freedom with our music selection. We never wanted one set playlist, but with four stores, having no guidelines turned what should be an enjoyable part of the job into a source of conflict. Who gets to choose? What happens when someone complains?

The answer came from an unexpected place: a recent purchase of a 2004 Tacoma with the original tape deck still working.
