Featured Vendor - Midwife & the Baker

We love our local vendors and we want to highlight some of our favorite friends! If you’ve followed our emails and social media you may remember last August when we debuted a new vendor in our Cole Valley market: Midwife & the Baker!

This locally-run bakery is aptly named for owners Mac and Jaime's careers of choice (he is the baker and she is the midwife), and the husband-and-wife duo work closely to provide the Bay Area with delicious baked goods using high-quality ingredients. They partner with California farmers to source whole grains and they even mill their own flour fresh in the bakery!

With the effects of COVID-19, small businesses are working harder than ever to continue operations. Midwife & the Baker have changed their approach slightly to keep up with demand. Customers can buy freshly milled flours, sourdough starter, and fully-baked loaves from their online shop. Whether you’re diving headfirst into home baking or would rather leave that to the professionals, there is something for everyone!

And for those who are taking on homemade bread, Midwife & the Baker posted a super easy to follow recipe to kickstart your own sourdough starter and bread loaves! Practice makes perfect, and Mac and Jamie have certainly perfected their baked goods.

In case you aren’t close to our market, be sure to see the impressive list of vendors that carry Midwife & the Baker products; find them at farmers’ markets, grocery stores, and restaurants all around the Bay Area (don’t forget to check which vendors and markets are still operational at this time!)

Follow their Instagram and check their website for updates! We love their products and we hope you do too!

This August, Dead & Company are playing Golden Gate Park, four blocks from our Inner Sunset store on 9th Avenue.

The same music that shaped my understanding of joy, community, and what it means to be present will be echoing through the neighborhood where we've built our newest store. The same songs I learned on my brothers' bedroom floor, the same recordings I obsessed over as a teenager, the same tape that was playing when Charlie and I took our first ride in the Tacoma. Everything comes full circle in the place where we're trying to prove that grocery stores can still be neighborhood cornerstones.

The tape wall in our 9th Avenue store exists because we've been struggling to find the right balance of structure and freedom with our music selection. We never wanted one set playlist, but with four stores, having no guidelines turned what should be an enjoyable part of the job into a source of conflict. Who gets to choose? What happens when someone complains?

The answer came from an unexpected place: a recent purchase of a 2004 Tacoma with the original tape deck still working.
