One Year In The Inner Sunset: Building A Community Hub
As a store manager, more often than not you are inheriting your workplace. You join a store that already has its own soul. It has its existing clientele and current staff. The store has history. As an incoming manager, you learn what others have done before you; what has worked and what has not. When we opened the shop on 9th Ave, the team and I had the opportunity to write the store’s history and shape its culture. The pressure of setting a good first impression was real.
As the days went on after we opened, I realized that the culture of a store does not exist in a vacuum. It is dependent on its community and how the team rises to meet that community. The Inner Sunset is such a diverse and wonderful neighborhood. Between the families getting ingredients for dinner and those heading into Golden Gate Park for a picnic - we found a prevailing kindness from the community. Even before we opened to the public, the guests were characteristically welcoming. It's a sort of care that is infectious and easy to follow. One of my favorite memories of our Grand Opening is the Community Joy Wall we started - a board where guests can write down moments of their day that brought them joy and share them with others to read. Even now, I never skip a day to read the new cards on the Joy Wall. Some cards are sweet and simple – like times spent with friends, or a happy event. Others are strange and intriguing. My current favorite simply asserts "Steam Bun," and I can't help but smile and agree.
During my four years at Luke's Local, it has taken me a while to understand what it means to be a "community hub" and what we can add to a neighborhood. At our base, we are a grocery store. But, as I have seen, we are also a meeting spot and a place to run into friends. We are a place to share with others and a place of discovery. I love seeing guests engage with a featured artist doing a pop-up, or with a vendor when they come to do a demo. Or even the small everyday conversations with neighbors about what they are making for dinner - these are the moments of connection that are at the heart of what we hope to provide. These connections make up our store’s history and culture. The one year anniversary celebration is a recognition of the relationship we have built with the Inner Sunset, one that we will continue to nurture for years to come.

Cooking for Chosen Family: Why the Fox Den's Thanksgiving Tastes Like Love
Here's what most people don't realize about cooking for hundreds of families: you start planning the moment you know it matters. And Thanksgiving always matters.
While you were still recovering from New Year's Eve, I was already thinking about your Thanksgiving table. Our Luke’s Local turkey orders are sent to the farmers in January. Yes, that’s how far in advance we start.

I love the store and the amazing fresh fruit and veggies! I would like to suggest that you post recipes – a beautiful fresh batch of blueberries-a recipe for blueberry crumble. New batch of green beans? Pesto pasta with green beans and potatoes. Thank you for considering and keep up the good work.
